Life's Too Short NOT to Explore

In Memoriam of V

On the day of our birth I’m reminded of your death. One year ago from today you were mine. An uncertain future that took us 15k miles across 26 states from Atlantic to Gulf, Pacific to Lake Michigan and back, our time was paved in asphalt and liberty. From scorching hot afternoons across the Sonoran Desert to freezing mountain passes over the Rockies, we kept each other safe moving forward to the next unknown.

There were some harrowing times. In the beginning it was 200 turns and 6000’ of elevation changes, creeping along hairpin turns atop the Blue Ridge Highway after we’d only been together for a month. Or closer to the end, riding through the night across endless stretches of Iowan fields and torrential storm cells, we arrived water logged, wind blown and bleary eyed in Chi-town after 20 hours of riding. Somehow, we always made it to our destination.

I remember our final night vividly on October 29th, when Sandy’s high winds slowed and the surge water started creeping in. I left you in the driveway, like any other night but by midnight, you turned into a pumpkin and were lost from me forever, swallowed by salty water.

You were not an inanimate object to me. My spirit was joined with you as we forged our way across time and space, exploring new territory and expanding our universe. The beauty of all the spaces invaded us through osmosis, leaving a delicate cicatrice along our soul, to be tickled and tongued in times of trouble.

On this day my Voyager, I think of you. I breath in the dust storms, sand, and salty air, and exhale a dream we lived together. While our time may have been brief, each and every moment was perfect and I shall never forget you.

May you rest in peace and may the Gods resurrect you when the moon and stars align.

D88-M9697: End of the Road
3 months, 24 states later I’ve returned to the East Coast to surprise my mother for her birthday. Although the road continues forever it’s time for me to get off and dedicate myself instead of merely passing thru and observing. I wish that I somehow captured one-billionth of the beauty that I experienced but I believe it resides somewhere in my heart. I’ve already dreamed of my next journey but first things first: be with loved ones and start saving. Because where there’s a dream, there’s a way.

D86-M9283: Eastbound and Downpour
Don’t let beautiful weather in Chicago fool you. Hours later freak storms can pummel you with winds, hail and lightning. But I trek home thru thunderclouds ready for anything before me. Nothing can stop me now.
